Engineering selection
Shaped packs need orientation, panel control and a defined label path
Square, rectangular, hexagonal and irregular containers cannot be treated as freely rotating round bottles. The machine must present the correct panel to the label head, control the pack as the label crosses an edge and prevent the next face arriving too early or too late.
Panel-to-panel label path
A label crossing a corner behaves differently from a label contained within one flat panel. Material stiffness, adhesive and corner radius should be assessed with the production label.
Orientation method
State whether the pack has a handle, seam, cap feature or printed mark that can be used as a reference. If no repeatable feature exists, mechanical orientation may be limited.
Changeover evidence
Test the extremes of the proposed product range and record guides, timing and orientation settings. A setting that works for one panel width may not transfer directly to another shape.
When another labelling route is likely to be better
Use front and back equipment for two opposing flat faces, wrap-around equipment for truly cylindrical packs, and a sleeve applicator where full-body shrink decoration is required.
Send samples and the intended acceptance check
Include product dimensions, production label rolls, normal output, changeover range, line layout and the required label position. Lancing UK can then check whether this range is the correct commercial route.
Application engineering
Index the correct panel before application
Square, hexagonal and irregular containers need a reliable orientation reference. A label head cannot correct a product that reaches the peel point on the wrong panel or at a changing angle.
Orientation feature
Identify corners, flats, seams, handles, caps or printed marks that can provide a stable datum.
Panel variation
Measure usable flat width and transitions between panels on the real moulded pack.
Label design
Keep critical text and barcodes away from uncontrolled corners unless the application is designed to span them.
Format change
Record orientation device, guide, label-head and recipe settings for each geometry.
